I present to you… the Wild Cats of Hong Kong…

For those of you who might have seen the San Francisco documentary, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, I think there’s a movie in the making about the dozens of cats that inhabit Ladder Street between Queens Road and Caine Road – the road which I walk every day to and fro from work. Everyday, I go down a flight of 300 steps and at night, I go back up 300 steps – it’s my daily workout. To accompany me in my daily exercise are lots and lots of wild cats, usually a dozen or so that I spot along the way. I decided to take a photo of all of them for today’s blog.

These cats litter the side passagways and stairwells all along Ladder Street. Here are two of them next to Upper Lascar Road – aka “Cat Street”


Yup… Upper Lascar Road is home to Hong Kong’s most famous antiques markets …and DOZENS of wild cats. In fact, it was originally named “Cat Street”.


So I guess according to this historical marker, these cats have been here as long as Hong Kong has been around … perhaps over a hundred years…


I found this kitty licking up food in a puddle. Kind of gross, actually…

I’m guessing that this local school is trying to discourage the feeding of wild cats …


These cages can’t hold the cats back.. they manage to climb around and over all barriers…


And finally, after a long walk back home… This is looking down from the top of Ladder Road – home to Hong Kong’s wild cats…


Seriously, is anyone doing a documentary on the subject? These families of cats have been here probably longer than any of the rest of u
s have … since the beginning of Hong Kong… If they can do it about parrots in San Francisco, I’m sure you could make a great movie about cats in Hong Kong.
